The Subject
Eren is an unemployed graduate from the Department of Radio, TV and Cinema. Although he wants to make a film, he has to earn money to make his life go on. Looking for a job as a sales consultant to get rid of this process, he finds the solution in a different way when job applications are negative. He, who has seen YouTubers make good money for a while, opens a Youtube channel about art house cinema. But because he belongs to the old world, he is lonely in the new and digital world. The only comment he has to his untracked videos is an insulting comment. In the process, he, who has completed reading Foucault’s book of Subject and Power, realizes that he is in fact the subject. He chooses to be a subject rather than a lonely object of the new and digital world and mirrors the digital world.

He is, however, greeted by patriarchal expectations placed on black men, when his friends start questioning his strength – both as a man and as a black person – since they view depression and anxiety tobe “sissy” white constructs. The stigma and ignorance around mental health follows him home when his family suggests that he under goes a spiritual ritual to cleanse him of his “curse”. Being ostracised by both his family and his friends sends Mphumeleli into a deeper state of depression and anxiety.
