The Experience For You

Todd Swick, a Board certified Neurologist and Sleep Medicine Specialist presents this documentary exploring on-going clinical sleep medicine research on earth and on the International Space Station, focusing on sleep and wake states related to sleep deprivation (inadequate sleep), insomnia, circadian rhythm changes that shift our internal time clocks, space pharmacology, and bright light therapy. The astronauts face a unique challenge to minimize disruptive circadian shifts due to sixteen sunrises and sunsets within their 24-hour period versus our customary one sunrise and sunset per 24-hour period. This unique timing situation experienced on the International Space Station may result in sleep deprivation and decreased performance, which may have negative results in the hostile environment of space, as well as here on earth. Currently, there are over 80 classifications of sleep disorders and more than 70 million Americans suffering from them, this continued sleep medicine research is critical to continue both here on earth and in space!
