a city symphony in miniature, dedicated to anyone who has gotten lost in thought while stuck on the midwinter train. to all that unfolds in those private reveries.
Light, time, and landscape in Porto, August 2016. Filmed during the massive forest fires in Northern Portugal, a thick pall of smoke has gathered ominously over the Douro river. Kevin Dong: “As a medium capable of representing time in different ways, cinema is a vital tool which allows us to perceive the Anthropocene differently.” Luma 015(4), Winter 2019.
Other Routes is a memory, a moment in time repeated over and over. A catalog of images, sounds, thoughts and impressions lost over time in it's own repetition. Once reclaimed and restored is the memory as it is retold the same as the moment in which it took place?
Music video for Leo Crandall's "How" included in the album "Unknowable and Stunning Thing". Shot in 16mm and Super 8 film.
This experimental autobiographical film, in which features the filmmaker's family, questions the emotion of the faded moment through audiovisual memory. The artist reappropriates on Super8 film the last moments of Hélène Lamoureux, his recently deceased grandmother. The memory image crystallizes a chaos frozen around the inanimate body.
A tightly regimented series of views from around the town of Bethesda and the nearby abandoned Dinorwic slate quarry in North Wales portrays the scars of this historic local industry as a ghostly, oppressive presence in the landscape. Short clips shot on DS8mm are arranged in a tiled, grid-like structure that evokes the stacks of roofing slates once produced in the old quarry. The distorted drone and clattering slates of the soundtrack heighten the sense of a surreal and overbearing atmosphere.
Black kites soar on thermals along the Kamo river in Kyoto. Flags billow. Cacti spin. Plum trees blossom. Pigeons make love atop a clock. Friends chat by the riverside. Filmed February/March 2019 on a single 40 year old cartridge of Kodachrome Super 8 and hand-developed in Caffenol. The film was heavily fogged, but there are some (real) images.
An Egyptian boy grows up outside an apartment building on the streets of Cairo. As he gets older, surrounded by his family and religion- he searches for happiness in the small space they reside in on the streets of Cairo.
The seer passes beneath branches, crosses fields, observes the quiet corners of creation. Bright and dark take turns showing their faces, a two-sided phantasm, one energy shape-shifting through time. The seer makes note, gleans eidolons.
