A transgender filmmaker investigates Australia’s lack of funded trans healthcare, and how this prevents others from accessing the care that saved his own life.Uncovered Lives follows filmmaker Kai Wharton as he searches for ways to help other transgender Australians seeking gender-affirming care. Knowing firsthand how life-saving this care can be, Kai sets out to examine the obstacles that impede trans people seeking medical care. He investigates why Medicare, Australia's public healthcare system, does not cover trans healthcare, and how this lack of financial accessibility takes a massive toll on transgender Australians. Through intimate interviews with trans people struggling for the care they desperately need, a leading professional in Australian trans healthcare, and a trans politician, Kai uncovers a loving and powerful community committed to making healthcare more accessible for all.

This film is a poetic composition of memory, influence and identity. First Nations filmmaker Jason Haji-Ali who wrote, produced and directed this film explores his cultural identity as he reflects on his childhood, the toxicity of social media and conversation with his grandmother, Phyllis. This sensitive, gentle yet powerful film is guided by Haji-Ali's voice as he attempts to strengthen his cultural identity and reconnect with his indigenous heritage. Conversations with his grandmother lead Jason to question the impact of the Stolen Generation as it passes through his family's history. His grandmother's stories help shape his understanding of what it means to be Aboriginal.
